Since so many Spain moves are also downsizes, the useful conversation is often what not to bring. UK appliances work fine in Spain with the right adaptor or a plug change, but big white goods are worth weighing up over such a distance. Outdoor furniture, bikes and barbecues all travel, but anything that’s lived on a balcony or in a yard needs a clean first so it doesn’t snag a border check. The route
Onto the A12/A11 to the M25 and the Channel, then the long, steady drive down the French Atlantic side past Bordeaux to the Pyrenees, and over into Spain. From there it fans out: east to Catalonia and Barcelona, down the Mediterranean coast to the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, inland to Madrid. The Balearics we reach onward from the mainland ports.
Customs and paperwork
Since Brexit, a move to Spain needs the full set: an inventory, a transit declaration for the goods crossing the EU, and — for those making Spain their main home — the transfer-of-residence route that can bring belongings in without duty when the conditions are met. Spain ties much of its admin to the NIE and residency, which sit with you, but they can touch the goods paperwork, so we join the dots and prepare the customs side with you. The residency and the NIE number tend to drive everything else, so start those early with the right advice. On our side, the first thing to settle is whether it’s a permanent move or a holiday-home fit-out, because that decides which customs route your belongings take.
Can you deliver to an apartment on the Costas?
Regularly — it’s our most common Spanish drop, and it plays to what we do best in Stratford: lift bookings, narrow underground parking a full-size lorry can’t enter, gated urbanisación access. We check those at the survey and bring a smaller shuttle vehicle where the block demands it.
Do you handle the islands as well as the mainland?
